Animal performance is influenced by:

• Genes
• Non genetic factors (called the “environment”)
  • Feeding
  • Disease
  • Climate/topography
  • Management
• Selection “by eye” can be misleading
• How much of what you are seeing in a superior animal is
  • Genetic? – the only bit passed on to the offspring
  • “Environment”? – the superior way it has been looked after
• We CAN work out which animals are truly SUPERIOR
• This is possible using BLUP and the “Sheepbreeder” service delivered by Signet
  This ensures we can identify the animals that:
  • Performance Recording
  • Are better mothers
